I am a graduate of the University of Iowa's highly regarded program known as The Iowa Writers Workshop. As you know from my post below I now teach in the English Department at The Ohio State University. So last evening my respective loyalties were much divided as I watched the number 13 Iowa Hawkeyes battle number one Ohio State on national television.
When I was a kid my dad used to root for Ohio State's football team and when their legendary coach, Woody Hayes was fired for punching a Clemson player, well, there was gloom in our house to be sure. And we weren't even from Ohio.
When I attended the University of Iowa I rooted for the Hawks. I still cheer for them when they play anyone other than Ohio State.
Gore Vidal once said that the definition of politics is "knowing who is paying for your lunch." Ohio State dominated Iowa's football team on their home turf in Iowa City last night. One thing is for sure: in Big Ten football there will be another day and more than likely the Hawkeyes will rise again.
If the Hawkeyes would like to pay for my lunch, well, just let me know.
